Ethnic Minority Affairs Commission  (EMAC)

 The Ethnic Minority Affairs Commission, a standing Commission of the Connecticut Education Association, believes the Connecticut Education Association and its local affiliates are enhanced by diverse membership. The Ethnic Minority Affairs Commission (EMAC) promotes awareness of ethnic minority issues and encourages the development of organizational strategies to address those issues. EMAC supports the recruitment and retention of ethnic minority educators and promotes ethnic minority involvement at all levels of the organization.

EMAC builds internal capacity through various training sessions: education reform, parent/community involvement, closing the achievement gap and, recruiting/retaining ethnic minority teachers.

EMAC continues the implementation of the Ethnic Minority Initiative which focuses on increasing minority representation at the NEA and CEA Representative Assemblies, by, establishing and supporting projects in (Local) Ethnic Minority Affairs Committees. We recognized the aforementioned locals at the Human and Civil Rights Awards Banquet. EMAC hosted Unconscious Bias workshops in various locations throughout the state and assisted CEA in the statewide Education Reforums. EMAC representatives attended state and national conferences: The Hispanic Issues Conference, The Black Issues Conference, The Ethnic Leaders Meeting (NEA-RA), Women and Minority Issues Conference, CEA Summer Leadership Conference, Minority Leadership Training, CEA-RA and NEA-RA

EMAC sponsored fundraisers supporting the Connecticut Education Foundation scholarship funds. EMAC screened applications for selection of the Minority Scholarship recipients. EMAC continues to participate in CREC’s and ACES’ Minority Teacher Recruitment Action Programs. We continued to improve communication through making the “Ethnic Minority Member Voluntary Self-Identification Form” available to CEA members, compiling an accurate CEA Ethnic Minority Directory, and maintaining a listserv for ethnic minority members of CEA. We continued to improve communication through the CEA-EMAC Website link as one of the CEA Commissions. Our EMAC representatives attended County Council Meetings to inform locals of the commission’s work.

The Ethnic Minority Affairs Commission believes that our Association is enhanced by the diversity of its members. EMAC promotes awareness of ethnic minority issues and encourages the development of organizational strategies to address them. EMAC supports the recruitment and retention of ethnic minority educators. EMAC promotes ethnic minority involvement at all levels of our organization.

EMAC meets regularly (no more than once a month) during each school year. Meetings follow an open forum that allows for discussion of issues relevant to the Connecticut Education Association, minorities and the classroom. We meet at CEA headquarters in Hartford.

Important EMAC work

  • Mentors new minority teachers into Association work and provides a voice, advocacy and support for them
  • Provides a forum for learning about and discussing issues that affect our minority students and teacher members
  • Provides training to the  membership of the Connecticut Education Association
  • Publishes information about issues and events
  • Raises money for scholarship funds
